Tips For Choosing And Using All Natural Spices

By Jayne Rutledge

Organic focus has become very popular. Spice has now become a part of that. All natural spices make a much better selection, both for taste and health. They have no additives or preservatives. This allows their robust flavors to shine through. This means that the use of salt can be avoided. Health professionals have determined it is unhealthy to use salt in excess. There is also an avoidance of preservatives and additives that is conducive to better health.

Since the shelf life of most spices ranges from two to four years, there is not really a need to have added ingredients for prolonging shelf life. Their freshness and pure taste are preserved by using a few tips to keep them fresh for the maximum time. The full, robust flavor will last for a very long time if these tips are followed.

They should be stored in airtight glass jars that can be tightly sealed to keep out moisture, which is a major factor to decreasing freshness levels. Some are already packed in glass jars for sale. However, if the ones you want are not packed in glass, you can change them over at home, using your own glass jars. They can add a decorative element to the kitchen with the beautiful colors of the spice and the special racks that are available.

To maintain the freshness, you should never add a spice directly to a boiling pot. The steam can rise into the container, causing loss of freshness. You should shake the proper amount into the palm and add it to the pot that way. In relation to this, store them all in a cool, dry place, not over the stove, which is a popular place for many.

There are a number of ways to check for freshness. One can check for color. Red tends to turn brown, green fades, and some just lose color all together. Also, the aroma is a good way to determine freshness. To check, put a small pinch in the palm of the hand and rub. Fresh spices will give off a strong, typical aroma.

Where the spice is grown is a key factor in flavor. Different locations of growing yield slightly different flavors. Some locations yield peppers that are hotter, or vanilla or cinnamon that is sweeter in flavor than it does in other areas. Dill will also yield a stronger dill taste in some areas. Search for the location that yields what you expect.

The use of all natural flavorings benefits all concerned. Suppliers and growers work together in a mutual relationship. The supplier pays the grower a fair price, helping those growers economically. Many come from countries with lower economic levels. These purchases help them financially. Consumers get higher quality at a reasonable price, so they, too, benefit.

Cooking is an art that requires fine-tuning to get the exact taste you are searching for. In addition, healthy cooking includes using the proper ingredients. All natural spices are an organic option that can make the difference in a so-so dish and an outstanding one that will please the palate.
